A Japanese microalgae. Years of research. Now ready for local validation.

MEGUMI is built around a microalgae-derived material discovered in Japan and studied through research and field applications over many years. We are now opening the next stage: structured local validation across aquaculture and livestock environments.

Discovered in Beppu, Japan

The material originates from microalgae identified in Beppu, Japan, during a screening programme covering many different microalgae. Research has continued in Japan over many years, including collaborations with universities and research groups.

What researchers are investigating

Work to date has focused on understanding how the material behaves biologically and how it is used in practical production. Findings are treated as research results and hypotheses, not as universal outcomes.

Research context

Functional components

The material contains a glycolipid referred to in the research materials as DGDG. Research discusses how DGDG may be digested into related compounds and short-chain fatty acids, and explores possible relationships with energy metabolism and the gut environment.

    DGDG

A glycolipid present in the microalgae material.

  2. 2

    Digestion

Research discusses breakdown into related compounds and short-chain fatty acids.

  3. 3

    Studied relationships

Possible links with energy metabolism and the gut environment are being investigated.

These mechanisms are areas of ongoing research. Their relevance may vary by species, environment and production system.

Research areas

These are areas that have been studied. They are not guaranteed effects.

Mitochondrial and energy metabolism

Research materials include work relating to mitochondrial activity and energy metabolism.

Gut environment

Gut-related mechanisms and prebiotic-like functionality have been examined in research settings.

Stress and immune response

Markers relating to inflammatory and oxidative stress, and immune response, appear in research materials.

Production performance

Field work records growth, feed efficiency and survival in normal farm conditions.

MEGUMI is not a drug, not a probiotic, and not a treatment for disease. No health or production outcome is guaranteed.

MEGUMI is being developed as a biotechnology platform for evidence-led applications in animal production.

From Japanese evidence to local validation

Japanese results are evidence and a starting point, not a promise of replication abroad. Climate, species, water, feed, farming system, stocking density and management all differ between countries and farms. That is why MEGUMI works through a small starter trial, local observation and data, a structured pilot, and only then commercial evaluation.
